People and cellphone plans often seem to not get along. Most people would agree that they feel taken advantage of by their current cellphone plan.
That’s where Google has decided to step in. Google is developing Project Fi. This is the first cellular plan that I have seen that wants to give back to their customers.
To start, notice I am saying plan and not contact. Project Fi doesn’t use a contract to force you into anything. It is good old-fashioned freedom in a cellular plan. The basic plan is 20$ and includes: Unlimited domestic talk and text, Unlimited international texts, Cheap international calls, and Wi-Fi tethering. Need Data? They want to give it to you at a flat rate of 10$ per GB. Here is the real kicker… if you ‘ use it all, they credit the rest back to you. This is NOT the rollover plan that only allows you to roll over so may GB and expires. This is money right off the bill. You don’t use it… then you don’t pay for it. I can’t think of fairer way to pay.
If that isn’t enough to get you wishing your phone company would do similar. There are other perks to using Google’s Fi. Project Fi uses two carriers to get you good reception anywhere. They have partnered with Sprint and T-Mobile to get you the best signal you can. If there isn’t a Sprint tower near you, then you will switch to T-Mobile. Can’t get connected to a cell tower? Fi will also route your calls to go out via WiFi. The phone will automatically find and connect to recognized free Wireless hotspots in order to help you save on data and keep the calls clear. Worried about people getting your personal info? The phone also encrypts your outgoing traffic so that it won’t be spied on while on a public network.
While using Project Fi, you will be able to use any of your current devices to make calls. Your phone, your tablet, and your computer will all be able to place and take calls. The only negatives that I can see with this product is the current lack of a family plan. It makes it kind of difficult for some to meet all of their needs with the plan. Sadly, this plan can also only be currently used with a Nexus 6. Sorry, Apple fans. You can purchase when you sign up and there is currently a $150 discount on the phone. The Nexus 6 will be able to be used on any carrier should you choose not to stick with Fi.
