I don’t understand Spanish!!!

We have all tried to learn a language at some point or another and forgotten just about all of it.  Yet, we still plan trips to Italy or France like a hotshot.  Or perhaps we just got caught on the wrong side of Miami.  What do you do when there is no one to give you directions to your hotel or even to purchase gas?

Well it used to be that you would have to have a translator person or a phrase book to help you out.  However, with smart products in almost everyone’s hands, we have taken to the inter to get out of these sticky situations.

I would like to present Google Translate.  While it isn’t the newest off apps, a recent update has made it more useful than ever.  Google bought Word Lens last year and integrated it earlier this year to the translate app.

Word Lens allows real-time translations.  While in the app you can select the language and turn on your camera.  Point the phone towards a sign or a restaurant menu and you can translate the text right in front of your eyes.  After some testing, the app has some troubles with some more complex fonts and handwriting.  It also is a loose translation for larger sentences and paragraphs.  However, everything I tried has given me enough of the gist to be able to figure it out.

But this app has gone far beyond this.  Google has included offline translations.  It will translate voice and typed text.  Google has also integrated an area to do handwriting instead of typing to translate.

Some may not be impressed as some of these softwares have had limited success for a while.  However, if this software continues to improve thanks to the “Google-verse,” than eventually the language barriers will  be decimated.
