Microsoft Hololens

Some of you may have heard about Microsoft Hololens by now.  The video has been lighting up the internet by storm and for good reason.

For those of you who haven’t seen it:

If Microsoft proves the capability to do half of this, then this is the next big thing.  Some people have asked why it is so significant when things like Google Glass and Oculus Rift are coming out.  Well Google Glass is more like an overhead display.  The way Google Glass works is like putting a phone screen on your cars windshield.  You still drive and the world around you does not change.  The difference is this windshield just displays things like time and text messages.  On the flip side of the coin is the Oculus rift (or devices like it).  The Oculus Rift is more of a gaming system that is completely immersive.  The Rift completely takes away your surroundings and places you inside the game.

So I ask again, what is so significant about the Hololens?  Well it is the first device that takes the overhead display of Google Glass and interacts with your surroundings.  The display recognizes your walls, coffee table, even projects you may be working on and allows you to virtually interact with them before making a physical move that could end up in disaster.  The reality around you becomes completely augmented.  You can see Hololens create virtual pets in the very end of the video.  You can see it take away the need for TV sets.  If you want a 80 inch screen, then find a wall with enough clearance and expand the screen.

While only early videos of this product have been released, I sincerely hope Microsoft lives up to the hype that they created and brings this product to consumers at a price we can all agree on.

So what do you think about Hololens? Does it look to be a device worth pursuing or just another thing that will sit on people’s shelves and collect dust?
